The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) is warning residents about a recent surge in online casino scams targeting players in the province. The BCLC has reported an increase in fraudulent websites posing as legitimate online casinos offering enticing promotions and bonuses to lure unsuspecting players.
According to the BCLC, scammers are using sophisticated tactics to trick players into depositing money into fake accounts, only to disappear with their funds. These scams typically involve phishing emails, fake social media accounts, and fraudulent websites that mimic well-known online casinos.
“Online casino scams are becoming more prevalent, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when more people are turning to online gambling for entertainment,” said Lara Rohkramer, Director of Player Health and Safety at the BCLC. “It is crucial for players to be vigilant and do their due diligence before handing over any personal or financial information to online casino operators.”
The BCLC recommends that players only gamble on licensed and regulated online casinos that are authorized by the province. Players should also look for certifications from reputable third-party auditors, such as eCOGRA, to ensure fair gaming practices.
“It’s important for players to verify the legitimacy of online casinos before making any deposits,” said Rohkramer. “If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Players should also be wary of unsolicited emails or social media messages promoting online casinos.”
In addition to warning players about online casino scams, the BCLC is working closely with law enforcement agencies to track down and shut down fraudulent websites. The corporation is also providing resources and support for players who may have been victimized by online casino scams.
“We are committed to protecting players and ensuring a safe and secure gambling environment in British Columbia,” said Rohkramer. “We urge players to report any suspicious activity and seek assistance if they believe they have fallen victim to an online casino scam.”
