The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have issued a warning to the public about a recent scam involving fraudsters posing as Casino Rama in online gaming ads.
According to OPP spokesperson, Sergeant James Smith, the scam involves individuals creating fake ads for online gaming sites that are designed to look like they are affiliated with the popular casino in Orillia, Ontario. The scammers use the casino’s logo, name, and branding to lure unsuspecting victims into clicking on the ad and entering their personal and financial information.
“Once the victims click on the ad, they are taken to a website that looks very similar to Casino Rama’s official site,” said Smith. “They are then prompted to create an account and enter their credit card information in order to play their favorite casino games.”
Unfortunately, once the victims enter their personal and financial information, the scammers are able to steal their identity, rack up charges on their credit cards, and potentially even drain their bank accounts.
Smith urges the public to be vigilant when it comes to online gaming ads and to always verify the legitimacy of the website before entering any personal information. He also reminds the public that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
“We want to remind everyone to do their due diligence before clicking on any online ads or providing any personal information,” said Smith. “If you have any doubts about the legitimacy of a website, it’s best to err on the side of caution and not enter any sensitive information.”
The OPP is working with Casino Rama and other authorities to investigate the scam and identify the individuals behind it. In the meantime, they are urging the public to report any suspicious online gaming ads that claim to be affiliated with the casino.
In a statement, Casino Rama emphasized that they do not have any affiliation with the fake online gaming sites and urged the public to be cautious when engaging in online gaming.
“We take the safety and security of our patrons very seriously,” said a spokesperson for Casino Rama. “We want to remind everyone to only play on legitimate and licensed online gaming sites to ensure their personal information is protected.”
The OPP is urging anyone who may have fallen victim to the scam to contact their local police department or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre to report the incident and seek assistance.
This latest scam serves as a reminder for the public to always be cautious when engaging in online activities and to verify the legitimacy of websites before entering any personal information. The OPP is working diligently to track down the individuals responsible for this fraudulent scheme and bring them to justice.
