The Swedish gambling industry is set for a major shake-up, as the Swedish Trade Association for Online Gambling (BOS) has thrown its support behind a proposed review of the country’s Gambling Act. The move comes in response to growing concerns over the prevalence of problem gambling in Sweden, with recent reports suggesting that up to 500,000 Swedes are affected by gambling addiction.
The proposed review, which is being spearheaded by the Swedish government, aims to address a number of key issues within the current Gambling Act, including the regulation of online gambling operators, advertising restrictions, and measures to combat problem gambling. BOS, which represents a number of leading online gambling companies in Sweden, believes that the review is necessary in order to create a more sustainable and responsible gambling market in the country.
“Problem gambling is a serious issue in Sweden, and we believe that the current Gambling Act is not doing enough to protect vulnerable players,” said Gustaf Hoffstedt, Secretary General of BOS. “By supporting this review, we hope to see greater regulation of online gambling operators, more effective advertising restrictions, and better support for problem gamblers.”
The proposed review has received widespread support from other industry stakeholders, including the Swedish Association of Gambling Operators (SPER). SPER has called for the review to include measures to combat illegal gambling operators, as well as stronger consumer protections for players.
“We believe that a review of the Gambling Act is long overdue, and we welcome the government’s initiative to address the issues facing the Swedish gambling market,” said Jenny Nilzon, CEO of SPER. “By working together with regulators and other industry stakeholders, we can create a safer and more sustainable gambling environment for Swedish players.”
The proposed review is set to be launched later this year, with a public consultation expected to take place in the coming months. It is hoped that the review will lead to significant changes in the regulation of the Swedish gambling industry, with a focus on protecting vulnerable players and promoting responsible gambling practices.
Overall, the proposed review of the Gambling Act has the potential to make a real difference in the Swedish gambling market, and to create a safer and more responsible environment for players. With the support of BOS and other industry stakeholders, it is hoped that the review will lead to a more sustainable and regulated gambling market in Sweden.
