According to recent data released by the WVCPG, calls to their gambling hotline have nearly doubled in the past year, with over 2,000 calls received in 2024 alone. This surge in calls has been attributed to the growing availability of online gambling options and the increased legalization of sports betting in many states.
“We have seen a dramatic increase in the number of individuals reaching out to us for help with their gambling addiction,” said Dr. Sarah Anderson, the Executive Director of the WVCPG. “The rise of online gambling platforms and the expansion of sports betting options have made it easier than ever for individuals to engage in risky behavior and develop a gambling addiction.”
