In a landmark agreement, South Korea and Vietnam have joined forces to combat digital sex crimes and online gambling. The two countries signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Monday, pledging to work together to crack down on these illegal activities that have become increasingly prevalent in both nations.
The agreement comes as a response to the rising number of digital sex crimes and online gambling cases in both South Korea and Vietnam. According to the Korean National Police Agency, there were over 5,000 reported cases of digital sex crimes in 2020, a 12% increase from the previous year. In Vietnam, authorities have also seen a surge in online gambling activities, with many individuals falling prey to illicit gambling websites.
Under the terms of the MOU, South Korea and Vietnam have agreed to enhance cooperation in information sharing, joint investigations, and capacity building to effectively combat these crimes. The agreement also includes provisions for the exchange of best practices and technologies to strengthen law enforcement efforts.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, South Korean Minister of Justice, Park Beom-kye, emphasized the importance of international cooperation in addressing transnational crimes. “Digital sex crimes and online gambling are serious offenses that require a coordinated response from law enforcement agencies around the world. By partnering with Vietnam, we aim to create a safer online environment for our citizens,” said Minister Park.
Vietnamese Minister of Public Security, To Lam, echoed Minister Park’s sentiments, stating that the MOU marks a new chapter in the bilateral relationship between the two countries. “By collaborating with South Korea, we can enhance our capabilities in combating digital sex crimes and online gambling, ultimately protecting our citizens from these harmful activities,” Minister Lam stated.
The signing of the MOU signals a significant step forward in the fight against digital sex crimes and online gambling in South Korea and Vietnam. With both countries committed to working together, law enforcement agencies are hopeful that this collaboration will lead to a reduction in these illicit activities and a safer online environment for all.
