The latest data from Spain’s gambling regulator, the Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ), has revealed that the casino segment has been a major driver of growth in the country’s gaming market in the second quarter of 2021.
According to the DGOJ’s figures, Spain’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) in the casino segment increased by a staggering 72.5% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2021. This growth was significantly higher than the overall gaming market growth of 10.7% in the same period.
The strong performance of the casino segment was attributed to several factors, including the reopening of land-based casinos following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, as well as the continued popularity of online casino games among Spanish players.
Online casino GGR in Spain also saw a significant increase in the second quarter of 2021, with a year-on-year growth of 35.2%. This growth was driven by a surge in online casino players during the lockdown period, as well as the introduction of new and innovative casino games by operators.
The DGOJ’s data also revealed that the sports betting segment in Spain continued to grow in the second quarter of 2021, with a GGR increase of 4.2% year-on-year. This growth was driven by the return of major sporting events, such as Euro 2020, as well as the ongoing popularity of online sports betting among Spanish punters.
Overall, the Spanish gaming market showed resilience and strong growth in the second quarter of 2021, despite the ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The casino segment, in particular, emerged as a key driver of growth, with significant increases in both land-based and online casino GGR.
Industry experts believe that the positive performance of the casino segment in Spain is a promising sign for the country’s gaming market, as it indicates a strong demand for casino games among Spanish players. With the continued growth of online gaming and the gradual easing of COVID-19 restrictions, the outlook for the Spanish gaming industry remains positive in the months ahead.
