In a bold and decisive move, the Pahang chapter of the Islamic party PAS has pledged to shut down all gambling premises in the state if it emerges victorious in the upcoming 16th General Election. This announcement comes as the party gears up for a heated battle against the ruling coalition in Pahang, with both sides vying for control of the state’s legislative assembly.
Speaking at a press conference held at the party’s headquarters in Kuantan, PAS Pahang chief Ahmad Shah Jan accused the current administration of turning a blind eye to the proliferation of gambling activities in the state. He highlighted the negative social consequences of gambling, such as addiction, financial ruin, and family breakdowns, and emphasized the need for decisive action to eradicate this vice from Pahang.
“We cannot allow our state to be overrun by gambling dens and outlets that prey on the vulnerable members of society. If PAS is given the mandate to govern Pahang, we will not hesitate to shut down these establishments and put an end to this destructive industry once and for all,” Ahmad Shah Jan declared.
The PAS leader also called on the state government to implement stricter enforcement measures to clamp down on illegal gambling activities. He criticized the authorities for failing to take concrete action against those responsible for operating unlicensed gambling premises, which he claimed have been operating with impunity under the current regime.
In response to PAS’s pledge, a spokesperson for the ruling coalition dismissed the party’s proposal as a populist gimmick aimed at garnering support from conservative voters. The spokesperson argued that the issue of gambling regulation should be approached in a holistic and pragmatic manner, taking into account the potential economic impacts of a blanket ban on gambling activities.
Despite facing stiff competition from the ruling coalition, PAS remains confident in its ability to secure a majority in the upcoming election. The party has been actively mobilizing its grassroots supporters and reaching out to voters across the state, positioning itself as the champion of Islamic values and social justice in Pahang.
As the campaign heats up in Pahang, the promise to shut down gambling premises has emerged as a key battleground issue that could sway undecided voters in favor of PAS. With the stakes higher than ever, the outcome of the 16th General Election in Pahang remains uncertain, but one thing is clear – PAS is determined to stamp out gambling in the state if it emerges victorious at the polls.
