A former casino dealer at The Star Sydney has been charged with rigging multiple roulette games, in what authorities have described as a brazen act of deception that has shaken the industry.
The dealer, who has not been named, was arrested following an investigation by the New South Wales Police Force’s Organised Crime Squad. It is alleged that the dealer manipulated the outcome of numerous roulette games by using a hidden device to control the spin of the wheel.
According to police, the dealer’s actions resulted in significant financial losses for the casino and its patrons. It is believed that the dealer was able to rig the games undetected for several months before suspicions were raised by casino staff.
Detective Superintendent Tony Smith, who led the investigation, described the case as “extremely concerning” and vowed to bring the perpetrator to justice.
“This was a sophisticated and calculated scheme that was designed to deceive both the casino and its customers,” Detective Superintendent Smith said. “The actions of this individual have undermined the integrity of the industry and damaged the trust of those who frequent the casino.”
The Star Sydney has since released a statement expressing its shock and disappointment at the alleged misconduct.
“We are deeply disturbed by these allegations and are cooperating fully with the police investigation,” the statement read. “We take the integrity of our games very seriously and have strict procedures in place to prevent any form of cheating or fraud.”
The dealer has been charged with multiple offenses, including cheating at gambling and obtaining a financial advantage by deception. They are due to appear in court next month.
The news has sent shockwaves through the gambling community, with many expressing their disbelief at the brazenness of the alleged scheme.
“This is a major blow to the reputation of The Star and the wider gambling industry,” said one industry insider, who wished to remain anonymous. “It shows that even in a highly-regulated environment, there are still individuals who are willing to take risks for personal gain.”
As the case unfolds, authorities are urging anyone who may have been affected by the rigged games to come forward and provide information to assist with the investigation.
“This is a complex and ongoing investigation, and we are determined to uncover the full extent of the dealer’s actions,” Detective Superintendent Smith said. “We will leave no stone unturned in our pursuit of justice for those who have been impacted by this dishonest behavior.”
