Online sports betting continues to make strides across the United States as North Carolina becomes the latest state to launch legal wagering options. With the opening of the market in the Tar Heel State, there are now 22 states plus the District of Columbia that have legalized online sports betting.
North Carolina officially launched online sports betting on November 23, 2021, through a partnership with DraftKings. The state’s residents and visitors can now place bets on a wide range of sports, including football, basketball, baseball, and more, from the comfort of their own homes.
“We are thrilled to bring online sports betting to North Carolina and provide our customers with a safe and secure way to enjoy their favorite sports,” said Jason Robins, CEO and Co-Founder of DraftKings. “We look forward to working closely with the state to ensure a smooth and successful rollout.”
In addition to North Carolina, several other states have also made progress in legalizing online sports betting. Four states – Maryland, Louisiana, Nebraska, and South Dakota – have recently passed legislation to allow sports betting, bringing the total number of states with legal wagering options to 26.
Maryland residents voted in favor of legalizing sports betting in November 2020, and the state officially launched its market on November 22, 2021. Louisiana also passed a sports betting bill in November 2020, with the first bets expected to be placed in early 2022. Nebraska and South Dakota both approved sports betting measures in November 2020 as well, with plans to have online wagering options available in the near future.
