A Massachusetts man is facing serious charges after allegedly stealing $13,000 worth of casino chips from the Encore Boston Harbor resort.
James Wilson, 36, of Salem, was arrested on Monday and charged with larceny over $1,200, trespassing, and receiving stolen property. According to authorities, Wilson was caught on surveillance cameras sneaking into the high-limit area of the casino and pocketing several chips before leaving the premises.
The theft was reported by casino security on Monday morning, prompting an investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Gaming Enforcement Unit. The footage showed Wilson apparently using his casino membership card to gain access to the restricted area before committing the crime.
Authorities say Wilson initially denied any involvement in the theft when questioned by police, but eventually admitted to taking the chips after being shown the video evidence. He claimed he had been struggling financially and saw an opportunity to make some quick cash.
Encore Boston Harbor officials have confirmed that all stolen chips have been accounted for and returned to the casino. They praised the quick response of their security team and the cooperation of law enforcement in apprehending the suspect.
Wilson was arraigned in Everett District Court on Tuesday, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. He was released on $5,000 bail and ordered to stay away from the casino pending his next court appearance.
The incident has raised concerns about the security measures in place at the Encore Boston Harbor resort, which opened its doors just last year. In response, casino officials have announced plans to review and enhance their surveillance systems to prevent similar incidents in the future.
For now, James Wilson faces serious legal consequences for his alleged actions. If convicted, he could potentially face substantial fines and even jail time for stealing from the popular casino establishment.
