On Tuesday, the Everett Police Department arrested a man for allegedly stealing $13,000 worth of chips from the Encore Boston Harbor casino. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old James Johnson, was caught on security cameras taking the chips from a gaming table and stuffing them into his pockets.
According to police reports, Johnson managed to escape the casino unnoticed with the stolen chips in hand. However, casino security quickly reviewed the security footage and alerted the authorities. Officers were able to track down Johnson’s whereabouts and apprehend him within hours of the theft.
Upon his arrest, Johnson denied any involvement in the theft and claimed that he had found the chips on the floor. However, police did not find this explanation credible and charged him with larceny and trespassing.
The Encore Boston Harbor casino has faced its fair share of security challenges since its opening in June 2019. In September of the same year, the casino was fined $35,000 by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission for failing to properly monitor its beverage service and allowing underage patrons on the gaming floor.
In response to the recent theft, a spokesperson for Encore Boston Harbor stated, “We take all allegations of theft very seriously and work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the safety and security of our guests and staff.”
Johnson is currently being held on $10,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court later this week. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison for the theft charge alone.
As the investigation into the theft continues, the Encore Boston Harbor casino is reviewing its security protocols to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Despite this setback, the casino remains a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, offering a variety of gaming options and entertainment amenities.
