Luzerne County libraries are set to receive a major boost in funding thanks to large grants from gambling funds. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board recently approved grants totaling $878,000 for eight different libraries in the county, providing much-needed resources for these vital community institutions.
The largest grant, totaling $350,000, will go to the Osterhout Free Library in Wilkes-Barre. This grant will allow the library to expand its programming and services, including technology upgrades, special events, and outreach initiatives to better serve the diverse needs of the community.
“We are thrilled to receive this generous grant,” said library director Denise Stachowiak. “It will allow us to enhance our offerings and reach even more residents in Luzerne County.”
Other libraries receiving grants include the Hazleton Area Public Library, which will receive $250,000 for building improvements and the purchase of new materials, and the Pittston Memorial Library, which will receive $100,000 for a new community room and expanded children’s area.
“These grants will have a significant impact on our ability to provide quality services to our patrons,” said Mary Illingworth, director of the Hazleton Area Public Library. “We are grateful for the support of the Gaming Control Board and eager to put these funds to good use.”
The grants are made possible through the Pennsylvania Race Horse Development Fund, which allocates a portion of slot machine revenue from casinos to support community projects and initiatives. The Luzerne County libraries were selected for funding based on their demonstrated need and the potential impact of the proposed projects.
In addition to the financial support, the grants also highlight the important role that libraries play in promoting literacy, education, and community engagement. With these additional funds, Luzerne County libraries will be able to expand their reach and provide valuable resources to residents of all ages.
“We are proud to support these libraries and the important work they do in our communities,” said Kevin O’Toole, executive director of the Gaming Control Board. “These grants will help ensure that Luzerne County residents have access to the resources and services they need to thrive.”
As the libraries begin to implement their projects and initiatives funded by the grants, residents can look forward to enhanced programming, improved facilities, and increased accessibility to resources. The impact of these grants will be felt throughout Luzerne County, reinforcing the vital role that libraries play in enriching the lives of residents and strengthening communities.
