MGM Empire City, the historic racetrack and casino located just outside of New York City, is seeking a coveted downstate casino license in a bid to expand its operations and solidify its position as a premier entertainment destination in the region.
Originally opened in 1899 as the Empire City Trotting Club, the venue has a storied history that dates back over a century. Over the years, it has hosted some of the most prestigious horse racing events in the country, including the Yonkers Trot and the Messenger Stakes. In 2006, the facility was rebranded as Empire City Casino and expanded to include a state-of-the-art gaming floor with over 5,000 slot machines and electronic table games.
Now, MGM Resorts International, one of the world’s leading hospitality and entertainment companies, is looking to take the reins and bring its world-class amenities and expertise to Empire City. The company acquired the property in 2019 and has since invested heavily in upgrading the facility and enhancing the overall guest experience.
MGM Empire City is now one of several bidders vying for a downstate casino license as part of New York’s recent push to expand legalized gambling in the state. If successful, the company plans to further develop the property into a full-scale resort destination with a hotel, restaurants, entertainment venues, and more.
The competition for the license is fierce, with several other prominent gaming companies also in the running. However, MGM Empire City is banking on its track record of success and its reputation for delivering top-notch entertainment experiences to set it apart from the competition.
In a statement, MGM Resorts International CEO Bill Hornbuckle expressed confidence in the company’s ability to win the license and transform Empire City into a “world-class destination that will attract visitors from near and far.”
Local officials and community leaders have also voiced their support for MGM Empire City’s bid, citing the potential economic benefits and job opportunities that a full-scale resort casino could bring to the area. If granted the license, the project is expected to create thousands of new jobs and generate millions in tax revenue for the state.
As the casino license decision looms, all eyes are on MGM Empire City and its ambitious plans for the future. With its rich history, commitment to excellence, and proven track record of success, the company is well-positioned to make a lasting impact on the gaming industry in downstate New York.
