A man has been arrested after allegedly threatening casino staff and leading police on a high-speed pursuit in Nitro, West Virginia.
The incident began at the Mardi Gras Casino on Wednesday evening, when the suspect, identified as 37-year-old John Smith, reportedly became aggressive towards casino employees after losing a significant amount of money at the slot machines. Witnesses say Smith began shouting profanities and making threats towards the staff, prompting security to call 911.
When officers arrived at the scene, Smith had already fled the casino in his vehicle. A high-speed pursuit ensued, with Smith allegedly reaching speeds of over 100 miles per hour as he raced down Interstate 64. Police pursued Smith for over 20 miles before he crashed his vehicle into a ditch near the town of Nitro.
Despite the crash, Smith attempted to flee on foot, but was quickly apprehended by officers. He was arrested and taken into custody without further incident.
Police say Smith is facing multiple charges, including making terroristic threats, reckless driving, and fleeing from law enforcement. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the pursuit.
The incident has left many in the community shaken, with residents expressing shock at the brazenness of Smith’s actions. “It’s scary to think that someone could be so reckless and dangerous over something as trivial as losing at a casino,” said local resident Sarah Johnson.
Smith is currently being held at the Kanawha County Jail, where he awaits a court appearance. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
The Mardi Gras Casino has declined to comment on the incident, but has stated that they are fully cooperating with authorities. In the meantime, the community is left to grapple with the aftermath of a chaotic and potentially dangerous situation.
