Pennsylvania’s gambling industry continues to thrive despite the ongoing pandemic, with the latest revenue report showing a significant increase in April.
According to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, overall gambling revenue in the state reached a record-breaking $404 million in April, up 23% from the previous month. This increase is especially impressive considering that the state’s brick-and-mortar casinos were operating at reduced capacity and under strict safety protocols.
The majority of this revenue came from slot machines, which generated $224 million in April, followed by table games at $80 million. Online gambling also saw a substantial boost, with revenue reaching $99 million, up 32% from March. This surge in online gambling can be attributed to the convenience and accessibility of virtual platforms, which have become increasingly popular among players during the pandemic.
The state’s sports betting industry also saw a strong performance in April, with total revenue reaching $26 million. This is a positive sign for Pennsylvania’s sports betting market, which has been steadily growing since the legalization of sports wagering in 2018.
One of the standout performers in April was the Parx Casino, which reported the highest overall revenue at $58 million. Rivers Casino Philadelphia and Wind Creek Bethlehem also posted impressive numbers, with revenue of $55 million and $52 million, respectively.
Despite the positive outlook for Pennsylvania’s gambling industry, there are still challenges ahead. The recent decision by the U.S. Department of Justice to reconsider its stance on the Wire Act could potentially impact online gambling operations in the state. Additionally, competition from neighboring states such as New Jersey and Delaware poses a threat to Pennsylvania’s market share.
Overall, the April revenue report highlights the resilience of Pennsylvania’s gambling industry in the face of adversity. With strict safety measures in place and a growing online presence, the state’s casinos and gambling operators are poised for continued success in the months to come.
