The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has once again taken a strong stance against illegal offshore gambling operators by blocking access to eight more websites. This latest crackdown comes as part of the ACMA’s ongoing efforts to protect Australian consumers from the risks associated with unregulated online gambling.
The blocked websites, which have not been identified by the ACMA, were found to be operating in breach of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. This legislation prohibits the provision of online gambling services to Australians without a valid license from an Australian regulatory body.
According to ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin, these latest blocks send a clear message to offshore operators that they are not welcome to target Australian players. “These sites were not only operating illegally, but they were also not providing the necessary protections for consumers,” O’Loughlin said. “By blocking access to these websites, we are helping to safeguard Australians from the potential harms that can arise from unregulated online gambling.”
The ACMA’s efforts to block offshore gambling sites have been widely supported by industry stakeholders and consumer advocacy groups. Tim Costello, Chief Advocate for the Alliance for Gambling Reform, praised the ACMA for taking decisive action against illegal operators. “These offshore websites have been known to exploit vulnerable players and disregard responsible gambling practices,” Costello said. “Blocking their access is a crucial step in protecting Australian consumers from harm.”
In addition to blocking access to these websites, the ACMA has also been working closely with international regulatory bodies to disrupt the operations of offshore operators. This collaborative approach has proven to be effective in reducing the prevalence of illegal online gambling in Australia.
Despite these successes, the ACMA acknowledges that there is still work to be done in combatting illegal offshore gambling. O’Loughlin stressed the importance of ongoing vigilance and collaboration in order to protect Australian consumers. “We will continue to monitor the online gambling landscape and take action against any operators who flout the law,” she said. “Our ultimate goal is to create a safe and responsible gambling environment for all Australians.”
As the ACMA continues to crack down on illegal offshore gambling operators, it is clear that the organization is committed to upholding the integrity of Australia’s online gambling industry. By blocking access to these rogue websites, the ACMA is sending a strong message that illegal operators will not be tolerated in the Australian market.
