The Mirage, one of the most iconic and influential casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, is set to close its doors after nearly three decades of operation. The news has sent shockwaves through the city’s gambling and entertainment industry, as the Mirage was not only a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, but also ushered in a new era of megaresorts in the 1990s.
Opened in 1989 by famed casino developer Steve Wynn, The Mirage was the first casino in Las Vegas to feature a tropical theme and a volcanic eruption show. Its success inspired a wave of megaresort construction on the Strip, including the Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, and The Venetian.
The Mirage was also known for its luxurious accommodations, including over 3,000 hotel rooms, multiple restaurants and bars, a sprawling casino floor, and world-class entertainment venues. Its iconic marquee sign featuring a white tiger became synonymous with the glamour and excitement of Las Vegas.
Despite its status as a pioneer in the industry, The Mirage has struggled to compete in recent years with newer, more opulent resorts that have opened on the Strip. The rise of online gambling and changes in consumer preferences have also contributed to the casino’s decline.
In a statement released by MGM Resorts International, the current owner of The Mirage, it was announced that the casino will cease operations on December 31, 2022. The company cited financial challenges and declining revenue as reasons for the decision to close the iconic resort.
Many longtime employees of The Mirage expressed sadness and nostalgia at the news of its closure. “I’ve worked at The Mirage for over 20 years, and it’s been my second home,” said one longtime staff member. “It’s a sad day for all of us who have dedicated our careers to this incredible place.”
As the Las Vegas Strip continues to evolve and reinvent itself, the closure of The Mirage marks the end of an era in the city’s storied history. The casino’s legacy as a trailblazer in the industry will undoubtedly be remembered for years to come.
