Ontario iGaming wagers hit $17.8 billion in 2023-2024, setting a new record for the province’s online gambling industry. The staggering figure represents a 25% increase from the previous fiscal year, highlighting the growing popularity of online betting in Ontario.
According to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG), the surge in iGaming wagers can be attributed to several factors, including the legalization of single-event sports betting in Canada, increased accessibility to online gambling platforms, and a shift in consumer behaviors towards digital entertainment.
“We are thrilled to see such strong growth in the iGaming sector in Ontario,” said OLG spokesperson Jennifer Thompson. “The pandemic has accelerated the adoption of online gambling, and we are continuously working to enhance our offerings to meet the increasing demand from our players.”
The $17.8 billion in iGaming wagers generated significant revenue for the province, with the OLG reporting a total of $1.2 billion in profits from online gambling activities. This revenue will be reinvested into vital public services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure projects across Ontario.
Despite the record-setting numbers, concerns have been raised about the potential negative impacts of online gambling, including addiction and financial hardship. In response, the OLG has implemented a variety of responsible gambling measures, including self-exclusion programs, age verification checks, and support services for individuals struggling with gambling addiction.
“We take responsible gambling very seriously and are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for our players,” said Thompson. “We encourage anyone experiencing issues with their gambling habits to seek help and support from our dedicated resources.”
Looking ahead, the OLG is optimistic about the future of iGaming in Ontario, with plans to continue expanding its online offerings and investing in cutting-edge technology to enhance the gaming experience for players. With the industry projected to continue its growth trajectory, the province is poised to reap the economic benefits of a thriving online gambling sector for years to come.
