The Minnesota Council on Compulsive Gambling operates a helpline that offers support and resources for individuals struggling with gambling addiction. Counselors are available to provide confidential assistance and connect callers with treatment options in their area.
“Before diving headfirst into mobile sports betting, it’s important for legislators to understand the risks and implications,” said Kelly. “We want to ensure that safeguards are in place to protect vulnerable individuals and prevent the potential harms associated with problem gambling.”
In addition to calling the gambling helpline, experts recommend that legislators educate themselves on the issue by attending seminars, reading research studies, and talking to individuals who have been personally affected by gambling addiction.
“It’s crucial for lawmakers to approach this issue with sensitivity and empathy,” said Kelly. “We know that many individuals with gambling problems suffer in silence, and it’s important to raise awareness and offer support to those in need.”
