AGCO fines NorthStar Gaming $30,000 for geolocation fail
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has handed down a hefty fine of $30,000 to NorthStar Gaming after the company failed to properly implement geolocation technology on its online gambling platform.
This punishment comes as a result of multiple instances in which patrons were able to access NorthStar Gaming’s online gambling offerings from outside of Ontario’s borders, which is a violation of the province’s gaming regulations.
Geolocation technology is a crucial tool for online gambling operators as it ensures that only individuals within the designated region are able to participate in the games. This helps to prevent issues such as underage gambling and ensure that the operator is compliant with local laws and regulations.
The AGCO has made it clear that they take these violations very seriously and will not hesitate to enforce penalties on companies that fail to uphold the integrity of the province’s gambling laws.
In a statement, AGCO Registrar Jean Major emphasized the importance of proper geolocation technology in online gambling operations, stating, “Operators must ensure that their geolocation technology is accurate and effective in preventing individuals from accessing online gambling sites from outside of Ontario’s borders. Failure to do so will result in penalties and fines.”
NorthStar Gaming has since taken steps to rectify the issue and has implemented additional measures to ensure that their geolocation technology is functioning properly. In a statement, the company expressed regret for the oversight and stated that they are committed to upholding the highest standards of compliance moving forward.
This incident serves as a reminder to all online gambling operators of the importance of maintaining robust geolocation technology and remaining vigilant in ensuring that their platforms are in compliance with local laws and regulations. Failure to do so can result in significant financial penalties and damage to a company’s reputation.
