A Long Beach man has pleaded guilty to running an illegal gambling operation in the Southern California city, authorities announced on Wednesday.
The man, identified as 42-year-old Michael Johnson, was arrested in a sting operation conducted by the Long Beach Police Department’s Vice Squad. According to officials, Johnson had been running an underground gambling ring out of his home for months before he was caught.
“Mr. Johnson’s operation was extensive and had been ongoing for quite some time,” said Long Beach Police Chief James Rodriguez. “We are pleased to have put an end to this illegal activity and to have brought Mr. Johnson to justice.”
Authorities began investigating Johnson after receiving several tips from concerned residents who noticed an increase in suspicious activity at his residence. Undercover officers were then able to infiltrate the operation and gather enough evidence to make an arrest.
During the raid on Johnson’s home, officials discovered a large amount of cash, gambling equipment, and several electronic devices used to facilitate illegal betting. Johnson was immediately taken into custody and charged with multiple counts of illegal gambling and money laundering.
In court, Johnson admitted to running the operation and pleaded guilty to all charges. He is now facing a significant prison sentence and hefty fines for his crimes.
“This case should serve as a warning to others who are thinking about engaging in illegal gambling activities,” said Long Beach District Attorney Lisa Simpson. “We will not tolerate this kind of behavior in our city and will do everything in our power to shut down these operations.”
Johnson’s sentencing is scheduled for next month, where he is expected to receive a lengthy prison term. In the meantime, authorities are continuing to investigate other individuals who may have been involved in the gambling ring.
Residents of Long Beach are relieved to see justice being served and are hopeful that this case will deter others from engaging in similar illegal activities in the future. The Long Beach Police Department is urging anyone who suspects illegal gambling in their neighborhood to report it immediately.
