A fast-moving wildfire west of the Golden Acorn Casino in Campo has prompted urgent evacuations as firefighters battle to contain the blaze, which has already consumed hundreds of acres of land.
The blaze, dubbed the Golden fire, was first reported around 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, the fire quickly spread, jumping containment lines and threatening nearby homes and structures.
As the fire rapidly grew in size and intensity, officials from the Cleveland National Forest issued mandatory evacuation orders for residents in the Campo area, as well as for campers and visitors at the nearby Golden Acorn Casino.
“We are urging everyone in the affected areas to evacuate immediately and to follow the instructions of emergency personnel,” said a spokesperson for the Cleveland National Forest. “The safety of our residents and firefighters is our top priority.”
As night fell, the glow of the flames could be seen from miles away, casting an eerie orange glow over the surrounding hills and valleys. Firefighters worked tirelessly throughout the night, using helicopters, air tankers, and ground crews to try and contain the blaze.
The Red Cross has set up evacuation centers in the area to provide shelter and support for those displaced by the fire. Animal control officers are also on hand to assist with the evacuation of pets and livestock.
Local residents expressed shock and concern as they watched the fire spread rapidly through the dry brush and rugged terrain.
“It’s scary to see how fast the fire is moving,” said one resident. “We’re just praying that everyone stays safe and that the firefighters are able to get it under control soon.”
As of Sunday morning, the Golden fire has burned over 500 acres and is currently zero percent contained. Fire officials are warning residents in the area to remain vigilant and be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice.
“We are facing extremely challenging conditions with this fire,” said a spokesperson for Cal Fire. “We are throwing everything we have at it, but we need the cooperation of the public to ensure everyone’s safety.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. In the meantime, firefighters continue to battle the blaze, working tirelessly to protect lives, property, and the surrounding wilderness.
For now, the community of Campo remains on high alert, with residents anxiously watching and waiting as the Golden fire rages on.
