In a record-breaking month for Colorado’s casino industry, the state collected a staggering $99.9 million in revenue during the month of August. This marks the highest monthly total in the history of the state’s gambling industry, surpassing the previous record set in July.
The strong performance was fueled by robust growth in both traditional casino games and online sports betting. According to the Colorado Department of Revenue, casino revenue from table games and slot machines reached $81.4 million in August, up 16% from the same period last year. Online sports betting, which was legalized in Colorado in May 2020, contributed an additional $18.5 million to the total revenue.
“The August numbers are a clear indication of the continued strength and resilience of Colorado’s casino industry,” said John Harte, president of the Colorado Gaming Association. “Despite ongoing challenges related to the pandemic, our casinos have shown remarkable adaptability and innovation in attracting customers and generating revenue.”
The impressive revenue figures come at a time when many other industries in Colorado are still struggling to recover from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. With travel restrictions lifted and vaccination rates climbing, more visitors are flocking to the state’s casinos, contributing to the uptick in revenue.
“We are thrilled to see such strong performance in the month of August,” said Sara Slane, senior vice president of government affairs at the American Gaming Association. “Colorado’s success is a testament to the strength of the industry and the unwavering support of policymakers and regulators in the state.”
As the state continues to see growth in its casino industry, stakeholders are hopeful that the momentum will continue into the fall and winter months. With new developments on the horizon, including the opening of several new casinos and the expansion of existing properties, Colorado’s gambling sector is poised for even more success in the months ahead.
In the meantime, state officials are optimistic about the positive impact that the record-breaking revenue will have on Colorado’s economy. “The casino industry plays a crucial role in driving tourism and generating revenue for the state,” said Harte. “We are excited to see this growth continue in the coming months and years.”
