Local recovery organization Concerned about Potential New Haven Casino
NEW HAVEN, CT – As the debate over a potential casino in New Haven continues to garner attention, one group is speaking out against the idea citing concerns about the impact it could have on the community’s recovery efforts.
Members of the New Haven Recovery Alliance, a local organization dedicated to helping individuals struggling with addiction, have voiced their worries about the potential negative effects a casino could have on those in recovery.
“We are deeply concerned about the potential opening of a casino in our city,” said Sarah Johnson, a spokesperson for the New Haven Recovery Alliance. “Casinos are known for preying on vulnerable populations, including those struggling with addiction. The last thing we need in our community is another temptation for those trying to stay on the path to recovery.”
Studies have shown that the presence of a casino can lead to an increase in problem gambling, which can have devastating effects on individuals and their families. According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, approximately 2-3% of Americans have a gambling disorder, with an additional 5-10% at risk of developing one.
In addition to concerns about the potential for increased problem gambling, members of the New Haven Recovery Alliance are also worried about the impact a casino could have on the community as a whole.
“Casinos often promise economic benefits to the areas they are located in, but the reality is often much different,” Johnson explained. “Studies have shown that casinos can actually have a negative impact on local businesses, as well as increase rates of crime and substance abuse.”
The group is calling on city officials to carefully consider the potential consequences of allowing a casino to open in New Haven, and to prioritize the well-being of the community over potential financial gains.
“We urge city officials to listen to the voices of those in recovery and to consider the broader impact a casino could have on our community,” Johnson said. “We believe there are better ways to revitalize our city than by bringing in a casino, and we are committed to working towards a healthier and more prosperous future for all residents of New Haven.”
As the debate over the potential casino continues, members of the New Haven Recovery Alliance are vowing to continue to speak out against the idea and to advocate for policies that support the recovery and well-being of all members of the community.
