A recent survey conducted by Fairleigh Dickinson University has found a concerning link between online betting and gambling problems among young men. The survey, which was conducted among male college students aged 18-25, revealed that a significant number of respondents who engaged in online betting also exhibited signs of problematic gambling behavior.
According to the survey results, nearly 40% of young men who reported participating in online betting also reported experiencing negative consequences as a result of their gambling activities. These consequences included financial difficulties, relationship problems, and a decrease in academic performance. Additionally, over 20% of respondents who engaged in online betting admitted to feeling like they needed to gamble more and more in order to achieve the same level of excitement.
Dr. Sally Gainsbury, a researcher at Fairleigh Dickinson University and one of the lead authors of the study, expressed concern over these findings. “Our research suggests that online betting may be particularly dangerous for young men, as it can easily lead to the development of gambling problems,” Dr. Gainsbury said. “Young men are already at a higher risk for developing gambling disorders, and the easy access and constant availability of online betting only exacerbate this risk.”
The survey also found that a significant number of respondents who engaged in online betting did not seek help for their gambling problems. Only 15% of young men who reported experiencing negative consequences from their gambling activities had sought help from a mental health professional or support group.
These findings highlight the need for increased awareness and education about the potential risks of online betting, particularly among young men. Dr. Gainsbury emphasized the importance of early intervention and prevention strategies to address problematic gambling behavior before it escalates into a more serious issue.
In response to these findings, Fairleigh Dickinson University is partnering with local organizations and mental health professionals to develop outreach programs aimed at educating young men about the potential risks of online betting and providing resources for those who may be struggling with gambling problems.
Overall, the survey results shed light on the alarming link between online betting and gambling problems among young men. It is clear that more needs to be done to address this issue and protect young men from the harmful consequences of problematic gambling behavior.
