The Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians recently announced a new smoking ban in all of its casinos, making them entirely smoke-free environments. This move comes as part of a growing trend across the country to promote healthier lifestyles and reduce the impact of secondhand smoke on patrons and employees.
The ban, which went into effect on January 1st, applies to all six of the tribe’s casinos in Michigan, including the popular Kewadin Casinos located in Sault Ste. Marie, St. Ignace, Manistique, Christmas, Hessel, and Munising. The decision to implement the ban was made by the tribal council in response to concerns about the health risks associated with smoking and secondhand smoke exposure.
“We believe that it is important to create a healthy and safe environment for all of our guests and employees,” said Sault Tribe Chairman Aaron Payment. “By going smoke-free, we are prioritizing the well-being of everyone who walks through our doors.”
The tribe’s casinos join a growing number of smoke-free gaming facilities in Michigan, including the MGM Grand Detroit, Greektown Casino, and MotorCity Casino in Detroit, as well as FireKeepers Casino in Battle Creek and Gun Lake Casino in Wayland. These establishments have all reported positive feedback from patrons since implementing smoke-free policies.
In addition to the health benefits, the Sault Tribe hopes that the smoking ban will attract more non-smoking customers who may have been deterred by the presence of smoke in the past. The tribe also plans to offer smoking cessation resources and support for employees and patrons who are looking to quit smoking.
“We are committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive experience for all of our guests,” said Payment. “We believe that by going smoke-free, we are not only promoting healthier habits but also opening our doors to a wider audience who may have stayed away due to concerns about secondhand smoke.”
While some patrons have expressed disappointment at the new policy, many have applauded the tribe’s decision to prioritize public health and safety. The Sault Tribe is hopeful that the smoke-free casinos will set a positive example for other gaming establishments in Michigan and across the country.
As the trend towards smoke-free gaming environments continues to gain momentum, it is clear that the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians is leading the way in promoting a healthier and more enjoyable experience for all casino visitors. With its commitment to creating a smoke-free environment, the tribe’s casinos are sure to attract a new wave of patrons who are looking for a cleaner and healthier gaming experience.
