In recent months, the West Virginia gambling helpline has reported a significant increase in the number of calls they have been receiving. According to officials at the helpline, the rise in calls is a concerning trend that they believe is indicative of a growing issue with problem gambling in the state.
The helpline, which is run by the West Virginia Council on Problem Gambling, provides support and resources to individuals struggling with gambling addiction. Over the past year, they have seen a 25% increase in calls to their hotline, with many individuals seeking help for the first time.
“We have definitely seen a spike in calls to the helpline recently,” said John Doe, a spokesperson for the West Virginia Council on Problem Gambling. “The pandemic has really exacerbated the issue of problem gambling, with many individuals turning to gambling as a coping mechanism for stress and anxiety.”
According to Doe, the increase in calls is especially concerning given the limited resources available for problem gamblers in the state. West Virginia currently has only one inpatient treatment facility for gambling addiction, and access to outpatient services is limited.
“It’s a difficult situation for many individuals who are struggling with problem gambling,” said Doe. “Without adequate support and resources, it can be difficult for them to get the help they need to overcome their addiction.”
In response to the surge in calls, the West Virginia Council on Problem Gambling is working to expand their services and increase awareness of their helpline. They are also urging state lawmakers to allocate more funding for problem gambling treatment and prevention programs.
“We are doing everything we can to help individuals who are struggling with problem gambling,” said Doe. “But we need more support from the state to truly make a difference in the lives of those affected by this debilitating addiction.”
As the number of calls to the West Virginia gambling helpline continues to rise, officials are urging anyone who is struggling with a gambling addiction to reach out for help. The helpline is available 24/7 and offers confidential support and resources for individuals in need.
