Police have identified a second suspect in the armed robbery of an elderly couple in Fox Lake, following their big win at a local casino earlier this week.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night, when the couple, who are in their 70s, were returning home after winning over $130,000 at the Grand Victoria Casino in Elgin. As they arrived at their residence in Fox Lake, they were approached by two individuals who brandished a gun and demanded the couple’s cash winnings.
The suspects, identified as 25-year-old James Johnson and 28-year-old Sarah Smith, allegedly took the elderly couple’s money and fled the scene in a dark-colored vehicle. The couple was left unharmed but shaken by the traumatic experience.
Through diligent investigative work and surveillance footage from the casino, police were able to identify Johnson and Smith as the prime suspects in the case. Johnson has a previous criminal record for armed robbery and is considered armed and dangerous by authorities.
Investigators are urging anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects to come forward and assist in their apprehension. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Johnson and Smith.
The incident has left the Fox Lake community in shock, as residents rally behind the elderly couple and condemn the brazen act of violence. Local businesses have also stepped up to offer support and assistance to the victims during this difficult time.
Police are continuing to investigate the case and are working tirelessly to bring the suspects to justice. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Lake County Sheriff’s Office or the McHenry County Scanner.
