In a recent survey conducted by Yahoo Finance, it has been revealed that a staggering 74% of Canadian office workers feel the need to maintain a poker face while at work. The study, which surveyed over 1,000 employees from various industries across the country, sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals in the workplace when it comes to managing their emotions.
According to the survey, the main reasons cited by workers for needing to maintain emotional composure at work include dealing with difficult colleagues or clients, managing stress and pressure, and navigating office politics. Many respondents expressed the need to stay calm and composed in order to appear professional and competent in front of their peers and superiors.
“It can be exhausting having to constantly suppress our true emotions and put on a facade at work,” said Sarah, a 32-year-old marketing manager from Toronto. “But I feel like I have to do it in order to be taken seriously and respected in my role.”
The survey also found that the pressure to maintain a poker face at work is particularly high among women and younger employees. Almost 80% of female respondents reported feeling the need to suppress their emotions at work, compared to 70% of male respondents. Additionally, 82% of employees aged 18-35 said they felt the need to maintain emotional composure, compared to 68% of those aged 36-50.
“This data highlights the emotional labor that many employees, especially women and younger workers, have to engage in on a daily basis in order to succeed in the workplace,” said Dr. Emily Johnson, a psychologist and workplace stress expert. “It can take a toll on their mental health and well-being in the long run.”
The survey results also revealed that the majority of respondents believe that their employers do not provide enough support or resources to help them manage their emotions at work. Only 35% of employees said that their company offers programs or initiatives aimed at promoting emotional well-being in the workplace.
In light of these findings, experts are calling on employers to create a more supportive and inclusive work environment that values emotional intelligence and promotes open communication. By recognizing the importance of emotional well-being and providing the necessary resources and support, companies can help their employees thrive and succeed in their roles.
As the workplace continues to evolve and the demands on employees grow, it is crucial for organizations to prioritize the emotional well-being of their workforce. By fostering a culture of empathy, understanding, and support, employers can create a more positive and productive work environment for all.
