Eugene, Oregon – An Oregon woman celebrated a milestone birthday in a unique way this week, as she marked her 105th year on this earth with a lively poker game at a local casino.
Mabel Johnson, a resident of Eugene, has been an avid poker player for most of her adult life. She first learned the game from her husband, who was a skilled player himself, and quickly developed a competitive edge that has served her well over the years.
On her birthday, Johnson was joined by friends and family at the poker table in the high-stakes room at the Wild Oak Casino. Despite her advanced age, Johnson showed no signs of slowing down as she confidently shuffled the deck and placed her bets with a steady hand.
“Playing poker has always been a passion of mine,” Johnson said. “I love the strategy and the thrill of the game. It keeps my mind sharp and my spirits high.”
Johnson’s skills were put to the test as she went head-to-head with some of the best players in the region. But her experience and expertise shone through as she outmaneuvered her opponents and emerged victorious in several key hands.
“I’ve been playing for so long that I’ve seen it all,” Johnson said. “I know when to hold ’em and when to fold ’em, and that’s what has kept me ahead of the game all these years.”
As Johnson celebrated her win, the casino staff presented her with a special birthday cake and a round of applause from fellow players. The festivities continued well into the evening, with Johnson regaling her friends with tales of her many poker triumphs over the years.
“It’s not every day that we have a 105-year-old poker champion in our midst,” said casino manager Mark Daniels. “Mabel is truly a force to be reckoned with at the table, and we are honored to have her as part of our gaming community.”
As the night drew to a close, Johnson reflected on her long and fulfilling life, expressing gratitude for the friends and family who have supported her throughout the years.
“I may be 105, but I’m not done yet,” Johnson said with a twinkle in her eye. “There’s still plenty of poker to be played and plenty of memories to be made. Here’s to the next 105 years!”
