The Indonesian Ulema Council (Majelis Ulama Indonesia or MUI) has recently called for members of the Regional People’s Representative Council (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat or DPR) and Regional People’s Representative Council (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Daerah or DPRD) who are involved in online gambling activities to be tried and punished.
The MUI, which is the highest Islamic authority in Indonesia, made the statement following reports of several high-ranking government officials and lawmakers allegedly being involved in online gambling activities. The council has expressed its concern over the increasing number of cases involving government officials who are using their positions for personal gain through illegal activities.
In a press conference held at their headquarters in Jakarta, MUI Chairman Muhyiddin Junaidi stated, “We must uphold the values of justice and integrity in our society. It is unacceptable for those who are entrusted with the task of serving the people to engage in activities that are not only illegal but also detrimental to the well-being of society as a whole.”
The MUI has urged the National Police (Kepolisian Negara Republik Indonesia or POLRI) and the Corruption Eradication Commission (Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi or KPK) to thoroughly investigate and bring to justice any government officials found to be involved in online gambling. The council emphasized the importance of holding those in positions of power accountable for their actions and setting a strong example for others in authority.
The news of government officials and lawmakers being involved in online gambling has shocked many Indonesians, who have long trusted their leaders to act with integrity and uphold the law. The MUI’s statement serves as a reminder that no one is above the law and that those who abuse their power will face consequences.
The MUI’s call for justice has sparked a debate among the public, with many expressing outrage over the actions of these officials and demanding swift and decisive action from the authorities. The council’s strong stance against corruption and illegal activities involving government officials has garnered widespread support from the Indonesian people, who are calling for transparency and accountability in their government.
As the investigations into the allegations of online gambling involvement continue, the MUI has reiterated its commitment to upholding the values of justice and integrity in Indonesian society. The council’s message is clear: those who betray the trust of the people will be held accountable for their actions, regardless of their position or influence.
