Indianapolis Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers is reflecting on his recent NFL gambling suspension, admitting that he made a mistake and has learned from the experience.
Rodgers, 24, was suspended by the league for violating its gambling policy, which prohibits players from betting on NFL games. The suspension, which was announced last month, will cause Rodgers to miss the first two games of the upcoming season.
In a statement released by the Colts, Rodgers expressed remorse for his actions and took responsibility for his mistake.
“I made a mistake and I take full responsibility for my actions,” Rodgers said. “I understand the seriousness of the league’s gambling policy and I regret any negative impact my actions may have had on my teammates and the organization.”
Despite his regret, Rodgers also expressed gratitude for the support he has received from the Colts and his teammates.
“I am thankful for the support and guidance I have received from the Colts organization and my teammates during this difficult time,” Rodgers said. “I am committed to learning from this experience and moving forward in a positive way.”
Rodgers, who was selected by the Colts in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, had a breakout season last year, registering 51 tackles, two interceptions, and six pass breakups in 16 games played.
Colts head coach Frank Reich spoke highly of Rodgers, praising his work ethic and character.
“Isaiah is a talented player with a bright future in the league,” Reich said. “We believe in him and will continue to support him as he learns from this experience and grows as a person and a player.”
The Colts organization has not commented on the specifics of Rodgers’ violation, but they have made it clear that they stand by their young cornerback.
As Rodgers looks ahead to the upcoming season, he is focused on being a better player and teammate, both on and off the field.
“I have learned a valuable lesson from this experience and I am committed to making better decisions in the future,” Rodgers said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to play the game I love and I will do everything in my power to make the most of it.”
Rodgers’ suspension is a reminder of the strict rules and regulations that NFL players must adhere to, both on and off the field. As he serves his two-game suspension, he will have the opportunity to reflect on his mistake and come back stronger and more focused than ever.
