The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has once again taken a firm stance against illegal online gambling by ordering internet service providers to block access to more unauthorized betting websites. This latest crackdown comes as part of ACMA’s ongoing efforts to combat the proliferation of illegal gambling activities in the country.
In a statement released by ACMA, the agency revealed that it had identified and investigated a total of 482 illegal gambling websites operating unlawfully in Australia. These sites were found to be offering a range of betting services to Australian residents without holding the necessary licenses or authorizations from the country’s regulatory authorities.
The ACMA has now issued formal blocking orders to internet service providers, instructing them to block access to these 482 illegal gambling websites. The move is aimed at protecting Australian consumers from the potential harm and risks associated with unregulated online gambling, including fraud, money laundering, and other criminal activities.
ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin emphasized the importance of taking action against illegal gambling operators, stating that “unregulated gambling websites often pose serious risks to consumers, including the potential for fraud, identity theft, and other criminal activities.”
O’Loughlin also highlighted the collaborative efforts of ACMA and other international regulatory authorities in cracking down on illegal online gambling activities. “By working together with our global partners, we can effectively disrupt and deter illegal gambling operators from targeting Australian consumers,” she said.
The blocking orders issued by ACMA are enforceable under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, which prohibits the provision of online gambling services to Australians without a valid license. Internet service providers are required to comply with these orders and prevent their customers from accessing the banned websites.
It is worth noting that ACMA’s actions against illegal online gambling have been supported by industry stakeholders and consumer advocacy groups, who have called for stronger measures to combat the growing problem of unauthorized betting activities in Australia.
With the latest round of blocking orders, ACMA has once again demonstrated its commitment to safeguarding Australian consumers from the risks associated with unregulated online gambling. The agency remains vigilant in its efforts to enforce the country’s gambling laws and protect the integrity of the local betting industry.
