In recent years, sports betting has exploded in popularity across the United States, with more and more states legalizing the activity. However, with the rise in sports betting has come a concerning increase in problem gambling. According to a recent report, calls to the Massachusetts Problem Gambling Helpline have surged by a staggering 121% in the past year, and experts are pointing to the legalization of sports betting as a major factor in this increase.
The report, released by the Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling, revealed that calls to the helpline have skyrocketed from 1,807 in 2020 to 4,000 in 2021. Experts say that the accessibility and ease of sports betting, combined with the excitement and potential for big wins, can be a dangerous combination for those prone to gambling addiction.
“Sports betting has become a huge issue when it comes to problem gambling in Massachusetts,” said Marlene Warner, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling. “The constant advertising, the ease of access to betting platforms, and the thrill of placing a bet on a game all contribute to the rise in calls to our helpline.”
According to the report, many of those seeking help for problem gambling cited sports betting as their primary form of gambling. And with more states legalizing sports betting, the concern is only expected to grow.
“The legalization of sports betting has opened up a whole new world of gambling opportunities, and for some individuals, it can be difficult to resist the temptation,” Warner explained.
In response to the surge in problem gambling calls, the Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling has been working to increase awareness and education around the risks of sports betting. They have also been collaborating with sports betting operators to implement responsible gambling measures, such as self-exclusion programs and limits on betting amounts.
“We want to ensure that those who are struggling with problem gambling have the support and resources they need to get help,” Warner said. “It’s important for all stakeholders, including sports betting operators, regulators, and lawmakers, to take proactive steps to address this issue and protect vulnerable individuals.”
As sports betting continues to grow in popularity, it is crucial for states to prioritize responsible gambling practices and provide adequate support for those who may be struggling with addiction.
