The Massachusetts Problem Gambling Helpline has seen a significant spike in calls over the past year, a troubling trend that has experts concerned about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on individuals struggling with gambling addiction.
According to data released by the Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling, the helpline received over 5,000 calls in 2020, a 32% increase from the previous year. This surge in calls has overwhelmed the helpline’s capacity, leading to longer wait times for individuals seeking help.
Experts attribute the increase in calls to a combination of factors, including the closure of casinos and other gambling establishments during the pandemic, as well as the economic uncertainty and isolation caused by the public health crisis.
“Many individuals turn to gambling as a way to cope with stress and anxiety, and the closure of gambling establishments has led to a surge in online gambling, which can be even more addictive and damaging,” said Dr. Elizabeth Cohen, a clinical psychologist specializing in addiction.
The Massachusetts Problem Gambling Helpline provides free, confidential support and resources for individuals struggling with gambling addiction, including referrals to treatment programs and support groups. Counselors are available 24/7 to offer assistance and guidance to those in need.
“We want to encourage anyone who is struggling with gambling addiction to reach out for help,” said John Davis, executive director of the Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling. “It’s important to address this issue head-on before it spirals out of control and causes further harm to individuals and their families.”
