As the world continues to grapple with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, experts are warning that we may see an uptick in illegal gambling activities in the coming months.
“We’re going to see probably an expansion of more illegal gambling,” said John Wilson, a professor of criminal justice at The University of Akron. “With the closure of casinos and other gambling establishments, people who are already predisposed to gambling may turn to illegal means to satisfy their urge.”
Illegal gambling, also known as underground or illicit gambling, refers to any type of gambling activity that is conducted outside of legalized and regulated channels. This can include activities such as sports betting, poker games, and even online gambling.
One of the main concerns surrounding illegal gambling is the lack of oversight and regulation, which can lead to a number of negative consequences. “When gambling is not regulated, there is a much higher risk of fraud, money laundering, and other criminal activities,” said Wilson. “This can have a detrimental impact on both individuals and society as a whole.”
In addition to the potential for criminal activity, illegal gambling can also have serious consequences for individuals who are caught participating in these activities. “In many jurisdictions, gambling is still illegal, and those caught participating in illegal gambling can face hefty fines or even jail time,” said Wilson.
As the pandemic continues to disrupt everyday life, experts are urging individuals to be cautious and seek help if they feel their gambling habits are getting out of control.
“If you or someone you know is struggling with gambling addiction, it’s important to seek help as soon as possible,” said Wilson. “There are resources available to support individuals in overcoming their addiction and getting their lives back on track.”
While the future remains uncertain, one thing is clear – the potential for an expansion of illegal gambling is a cause for concern. It is up to individuals, communities, and authorities to work together to address this issue and ensure that everyone can gamble safely and responsibly.
