In a show of economic resilience, Maryland casinos have continued to post impressive numbers despite the challenges posed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. According to the latest figures released by the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency, the state’s six casinos generated a total of $163.2 million in gaming revenue during the month of April.
This represents a significant increase of 25.3% compared to the same period last year when casinos were forced to close their doors due to the pandemic. It also marks the third straight month of growth for the state’s gaming industry, signaling a strong recovery in the wake of widespread shutdowns and restrictions.
Leading the way in April was MGM National Harbor, which reported a total gaming revenue of $63.3 million, accounting for nearly 39% of the state total. The bustling casino, located in Prince George’s County, saw a 22.7% increase in revenue compared to April 2020.
Horseshoe Casino Baltimore also had a strong showing, bringing in $22.5 million in gaming revenue, a 47.8% jump from the same month last year. Live! Casino & Hotel in Anne Arundel County followed closely behind with $18.9 million in revenue, a 19.9% increase year-over-year.
Other casinos in the state, including Hollywood Casino Perryville, Ocean Downs Casino, and Rocky Gap Casino Resort, also posted solid numbers, contributing to the overall success of the Maryland gaming industry.
The positive results come as a welcome relief for the state’s casinos, which have faced numerous challenges over the past year. From capacity restrictions to increased sanitation measures, operators have had to navigate a new normal in order to keep their doors open and customers safe.
Despite these obstacles, Maryland casinos have managed to adapt and thrive in an ever-changing landscape. The recent revenue figures not only showcase the resilience of the state’s gaming industry but also highlight the strong demand for entertainment and leisure activities as the economy continues to recover.
As Maryland continues to roll out vaccinations and lift restrictions, the future looks bright for the state’s casinos. With pent-up demand for entertainment and a renewed sense of optimism, the gaming industry is poised for continued growth in the months ahead.
Overall, the $163.2 million in gaming revenue generated by Maryland casinos in April is a testament to the industry’s resilience and ability to bounce back in the face of adversity. As the state looks towards a brighter future, the gaming industry will undoubtedly play a key role in driving economic growth and prosperity for Maryland and its residents.
