The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is warning residents to beware of unregistered online casinos after receiving multiple reports of scams targeting unsuspecting players. The warning comes after numerous complaints of individuals losing their hard-earned money to fraudulent online gambling sites.
According to OPP spokesperson Constable Peter Smith, these unregistered online casinos often lure players in with enticing bonuses and promotions, only to disappear with their money once a deposit is made. “These scams can be incredibly difficult to track and recover funds from, as they are often based outside of Canada and do not fall under our jurisdiction,” Constable Smith explained.
In addition to financial loss, these unregistered online casinos also pose a risk to players’ personal information. Many of these sites do not have proper security measures in place, leaving players vulnerable to identity theft and other cybercrimes.
Constable Smith strongly advises residents to do their due diligence before participating in online gambling. “Always make sure that the online casino is registered and regulated by the appropriate authorities, such as the Ontario Gaming Commission. Additionally, never share personal or financial information with unverified websites,” he urged.
To further protect themselves, Constable Smith recommends that players use reputable payment methods, such as credit cards or e-wallets, when depositing funds into online casinos. This way, they can potentially dispute charges and recover their money in case of fraud.
For those who have fallen victim to an unregistered online casino scam, Constable Smith advises them to report the incident to local law enforcement and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. While it may be difficult to recover lost funds, taking swift action can help prevent further financial loss and potentially lead to the apprehension of the perpetrators.
As the popularity of online gambling continues to rise, it is crucial for players to remain vigilant and be cautious when choosing where to play. By staying informed and aware of potential risks, residents can help protect themselves and others from falling victim to unregistered online casinos.
