Las Vegas, NV – The Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino has agreed to pay $720,000 to settle a disability discrimination and retaliation lawsuit brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The settlement comes after an investigation revealed that the hotel engaged in unlawful employment practices that violated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
The EEOC’s investigation found that the Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino failed to provide reasonable accommodations to employees with disabilities and unlawfully retaliated against employees who requested accommodations or complained about disability discrimination. The hotel also implemented a policy that prohibited employees from returning to work until they were “100% healed” following a medical leave, which is a violation of the ADA.
“The ADA provides crucial protections for individuals with disabilities in the workplace, and employers have a legal obligation to provide reasonable accommodations and ensure that employees are not subjected to discrimination or retaliation,” said a spokesperson for the EEOC. “The Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino’s actions in this case were unacceptable and unlawful, and this settlement serves as a reminder that we will not tolerate such behavior.”
In addition to the monetary settlement, the Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino has agreed to implement changes to its policies and procedures to ensure compliance with the ADA. The hotel will provide training to its employees on disability discrimination and retaliation, as well as ensure that reasonable accommodations are provided to employees with disabilities.
“We are committed to creating a workplace that is inclusive and free from discrimination,” said a representative for the Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino. “We take this settlement very seriously and are dedicated to building a culture of respect and equality for all of our employees.”
This settlement serves as a reminder to all employers that discrimination and retaliation in the workplace will not be tolerated. The EEOC will continue to vigorously enforce the ADA and ensure that individuals with disabilities are afforded their rights under the law.
