East Windsor, CT – The once-thriving Mohegan Sun Casino and Walmart properties in East Windsor now sit abandoned, with their futures uncertain and in limbo.
The Mohegan Sun Casino, which opened in 2007, was once a popular destination for gamblers and tourists alike. The massive structure, complete with a hotel, restaurants, and entertainment venues, was a beacon of excitement and activity in the area. However, following the opening of a newer, larger casino nearby, foot traffic at the Mohegan Sun dwindled and the decision was made to close its doors in 2019.
Since then, the property has sat vacant, its once-bustling casino floor now eerie and desolate. The parking lot, once filled with cars, now sits empty and overgrown with weeds. The fate of the casino remains uncertain, with potential buyers showing interest but no concrete plans in place.
Similarly, the Walmart properties in East Windsor have also fallen into disuse. The retail giant closed its doors in 2020, citing a decline in foot traffic and sales. The massive storefront, once a hub of activity for shoppers, now sits shuttered and empty.
Local residents have expressed concerns about the abandoned properties, which have become eyesores in the community. Some worry about the potential for crime and vandalism, while others lament the loss of once-thriving businesses in the area.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the properties, town officials remain hopeful for their future. East Windsor’s First Selectman, Mark Rees, has stated that he is actively working to find new tenants for the properties, in the hopes of revitalizing the area and bringing back much-needed economic activity.
In the meantime, the abandoned Mohegan Sun Casino and Walmart properties serve as stark reminders of the changing landscape of East Windsor. Once symbols of prosperity and growth, they now stand as vacant shells, waiting for a new chapter to begin.
