Albuquerque, New Mexico- The owner of a local convenience store is facing serious charges after allegedly giving cash payouts to customers who gambled on illegal gambling machines within the establishment. The Albuquerque Police Department (APD) confirmed that the owner, whose name has not been released, was arrested following an undercover investigation.
According to APD, the investigation began after several complaints were made regarding the illegal gambling operation taking place at the convenience store. Undercover officers were able to gather evidence that showed the store owner was indeed giving cash payouts to customers who played on the illegal gambling machines. APD also discovered that the machines were not properly licensed and were not regulated by any state gaming authorities.
“It’s a serious crime that undermines the integrity of our community and we will not tolerate it,” said APD Chief Michael Geier. “We are committed to cracking down on illegal gambling activities and holding those responsible accountable for their actions.”
The store owner is facing multiple charges, including operating an illegal gambling operation, money laundering, and corrupting public morals. If convicted, the owner could face hefty fines and possible jail time.
Local residents were shocked to hear about the illegal gambling operation taking place in their neighborhood. “I never would have thought something like this would happen here,” said one resident. “It’s very concerning and makes me question the safety of our community.”
APD is urging anyone with information about illegal gambling operations to come forward and report it immediately. They also warn residents to be cautious when visiting establishments with gambling machines and to report any suspicious activities to law enforcement.
The investigation into the illegal gambling operation is ongoing, and APD continues to work diligently to ensure the safety and integrity of the community. The store owner is scheduled to appear in court in the coming weeks to face the charges against them.
